It’s time to put away those breezy sun dresses and welcome fall, a season of evenings drinking wine fireside, cozy, warm sweaters, and pumpkin spice everything. We are always excited for this time of year as it greets us with wedding after wedding. Couples are in the mood to get married right now, which means you probably have a wedding or two coming up over the next few months.

Even those with the most equipped-for-anything closet get a little stressed thinking about what to wear to a wedding. New York City is especially tricky. Yes, anything goes here when it comes to fashion. But you have to be mindful to dress code, type of venue and event, and the couple’s personality. Need ideas on what to wear to watch your good friends say “I do?” Here’s our guide to stylish wedding guest looks for fall 2018.

Black Tie

Just because the invitation says “Black Tie” doesn’t mean you don’t have options. A floor-length evening gown is safe and meets dress code. However, a mid-length halter cocktail dress in shimmering gold is sexy and eye-catching while staying appropriate for the occasion. Look for jewelry and accessories that feature a classic twist. Dripping pearl earrings, a crystal encrusted clutch, and black heels add a touch of elegance to this look.

Romantic Countryside

The wedding is a day long affair taking place on a beautiful farm-to-table grounds in Upstate New York. Chances are you’ll be outside a lot. A pretty, long sleeve dress with floral print will keep you warm in the crisp fall air. Avoid the free love, flower girl vibe (we’re fans, this just isn’t the time or place) with luxe and shiny accessories. Posh up the frock with velvet ankle-strap pumps, gold dangle earrings, and a mesh clutch.

Downtown

The reception is at a hotel/restaurant venue known for its hip nightlife scene. Your fashion motto is “I’ll stop wearing black when they make a darker color.” But you’re willing to lighten up a little for a dear friend’s wedding… by donning a black leopard print dress. Maintain your downtown edge by accessorizing with suede pumps, a croco-embossed shoulder bag, and sleek silver cuff. You can even throw on your leather jacket if it gets cold.

Whimsical Garden

This enchanted gala will play out like a fairytale against the backdrop of the city’s premier botanical garden. Autumnal love is in the air and you can’t wait to dress the part! A blush, gold beaded wrap gown with flutter sleeves will sweep you blissfully through the evening. Complete your look with vintage-inspired velvet slingback pumps, sparkly rhinestone earrings, and an embellished gold mirror clutch.

Modern Chic

Your friends are getting married at a renovated, industrial building in Brooklyn. Perfect because this is the kind of venue where your modern chic style will fit right in. Start with a simple, crepe wrap dress in pale blue. Rich burgundy is a great accent hue – it’s sophisticated and adds a nice pop of seasonal color. Fringe earrings and a quilted bag with gold hardware provide a welcoming hint of texture and shine. Block heels may seem too business like at first. But considered with the ensemble as a whole, these Bordeaux patent leather pumps take a festive turn.

Remember, weddings are about celebrating the love shared between two people. At the same time, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look good while doing it!
