Flower Fridays: Poppies for Remembrance

Poppies are popular with stylish brides who want bright, modern bouquets. These intoxicating blossoms are also a beautiful way to remember loved ones who will be missed more than ever on your wedding day. In the western world, the poppy has long symbolized remembrance. After poppies sprang up where trenches had been dug in The First World War, people in Europe began to make and sell silk poppies, to be pinned to lapels in honor of heroic lost veterans.

Right now, through Remembrance Day on November 11th, over 800,000 ceramic poppies are on display at Tower of London Remembers. Each flower in this brilliant public memorial symbolizes a life. Use the hashtag #towerpoppies to find more photos and stories.

In Love at The Liberty Warehouse: a Wedding in Red Hook

Red Hook mural

“Love is friendship set on fire.”– Jeremy Taylor

“Joshua and I met the first week of college and became fast friends,” said Jenny Ninyo Kaplan. The two studied abroad and became travel partners. In fact, they got along so well that they decided to move to New York City together, as friends. “After about a year of living together, we began to realize what we had was pretty special,” Jenny said. “And quite possibly more than just a best friendship. So we tried it out – and it worked! Three years later, we got engaged. A year and a half after that, we had the most amazing wedding in New York with all of our family and friends.” The couple married at Liberty Warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn, with New York Harbor providing a scenic backdrop for the ceremony. Traditionally, yellow flowers symbolize friendship. Jenny chose a fresh, sunny color palette for her bouquet, carrying white and yellow dahlias, chrysanthemums, ranunculus and craspedia. Hydrangeas, freesia, and roses in pale peach and bright yellow joined the mix to adorn the tables and chuppah. Mason jar vases of flowers and succulents hung at aisle ends, adding a touch of rustic charm. Perfect Color-Matching for Weddings With the New Nix Sensor

image

nix sensor: a smartphone accessory for accurate color measurement

A new smartphone accessory lets you get color just right for your wedding. Color measurably affects mood, memory and confidence, so it’s no wonder brides spend so much time considering color schemes and palettes when choosing flowers, dresses, decor, venues and makeup.

Technology has taken color obsession to a new level. Just look at how many Pinterest boards and Instagram shots are sorted and tagged by color. And it’s hard to even imagine meeting with a floral designer or shopping for bridesmaids dresses without trading photos and inspiration by smartphone. But technology can also complicate color choices. Designers work with varied systems of color coding and web and mobile color identification apps are often quite inaccurate.

As the world waits for Apple’s announcement on September 9th, one thing is certain: whatever mobile, wearable, stylish gadget is introduced, tech-savvy brides will be among the first adopters.

It’s amazing to think about all the ways technology has been integrated into wedding planning and celebrations. Apps and online tools now streamline and enhance the planning process in ways the previous generation never imagined. Photos taken with smart phones and shared over social media channels are now so expected that couples who don’t want guests to share mention that request on their wedding websites. Read More
