In an age when people are meeting through dating apps and social media, the beginning of Ashley and Joe’s love story maybe considered old-fashioned by some. “We met at work,” Ashley recalls. “I had recently joined the company and a co-worker introduced us in the hallway.” At that moment, a seed had been planted with the perfect conditions for them to get know each other and eventually fall in love.

The Indian wedding ceremony is marked by numerous customs and elements with the mandap being the focus. Featured bride Rashna says, “The ceremony is where my culture was really put on display.” She took full advantage of the Bronx Zoo’s unique architectural features to create a captivating atmosphere that expressed her and Sean’s modern sentiment for tradition.

A remarkable scene awaited guests as they gathered into the Keith W. Johnson Zoo Center. While the building is used for scientific study and exhibition, it has a dramatic and spiritual feel. It started hundreds of years ago when touching the bride was believed to bring good luck. Can you imagine how uncomfortable and invasive that must have felt?! Unruly guests would go to such lengths as to rip off pieces of her dress! As a distractive way to appease the crowd, the bride would toss her bouquet and then make a quick getaway. When it came time to start searching for what she was going to wear at her wedding, Rashna got to skip the usual process of jumping from appointment to appointment at the local bridal boutiques. She explains, “My wedding dress had to be a traditional South Indian kanjeevaram saree. But I was lucky, because I was able to pick out my colors.” She chose a stunning jewel tone yellow and orange saree decorated with gold accents. Read More
