While draping as decor isn’t exactly a novel concept, now more than ever couples are using beautiful fabrics in fresh and creative ways to highlight focal points such as a ceremony structure, an entrance, or the dance floor. Just like choosing wedding flowers, there are basics you should know before covering any ceilings or walls. Draping comes in an array of textiles that best complement a desired aesthetic – sheer voile and chiffon are lovely choices for daytime and garden weddings, lavish velvet looks striking in a classic or historical venue, and shimmering satin blends wonderfully into a modern setting. Stephanie and Ricky met in Fall 2010 when both were still teenagers. “It was at Ricky’s best friend’s birthday party at a Hibachi Restaurant. We started BBM (Blackberry messaging) that night and haven’t missed a day since,” Stephanie remembers about their instant connection. Twelve years later and now living together in downtown Manhattan, the couple was taking their daily walk through the neighborhood. Usually a calm scene, the gates of St. Vincent’s Triangle Park had been taking over by FDNY due to a fire in the nearby subway station. Despite Stephanie’s serious hesitation, Ricky insisted they continue walking through the area. Her tone quickly changed to one of surprise after realizing that a photographer was taking photos of them. On April 1, 2022, Ricky got down on one knee and proposed to Stephanie.

Rachel and Adam met in Washington, D.C., where they lived a block apart. Rachel was attending Georgetown Law School and they started dating four months prior to the beginning of COVID. Rachel remembers, “We were lucky to be together during the pandemic and found a lot of activities to keep us busy.” Now deemed ‘Camp Adam’ by the couple, this time was spent doing everything from playing tennis, hiking, and kayaking to taking virtual cooking and candle making classes to doing puzzles. While many would find being thrown into such an intense situation while still getting to know a person challenging, Rachel and Adam credit this period for establishing the strong foundation of their relationship. “Adam and I perfectly balance each other out. We love to sit on the couch watching TV shows and movies together just as much as we love to play tennis or go out with friends. Neither of us could imagine spending our life without the other.” She finishes, “To this day, we still try to incorporate ‘Camp Adam’ activities into our free time.”

Gabriela and Sam met in 2019 when they both worked together at an advertising agency. After months of hardly ever interacting in the office, they joined coworkers for Friday night karaoke. The next morning, Gabriela woke up to a text from Sam asking her to go to the Central Park Zoo later that day. Remembering the effortless unfolding of their relationship, Gabriela says, “Sam and I knew immediately that we wanted to continue to see each other. There was no ‘what are we?’ stage. One day we were single and the next day we were together. It felt right and we just went for it. As they say, ‘when you know, you know.’”
