First Look Photos: This Magic Moment

image

First Look photos have become a popular trend in wedding photography over the past few years. Couples are often unsure whether they want these sneak peak shots. There is a common expectation that the groom will first see his bride’s dress as she walks toward him down the aisle and if that moment has been built up in wedding fantasies, it’s hard to let go. Of course, cultural traditions vary. In Jewish weddings, for example, the couple gathers with a witness, before the ceremony, to sign their ketubah. For Jewish couples, documenting the First Look may feel more natural.

Some photographers suggest doing the First Look from a viewpoint of practicality. If all formal couple, family and wedding-party portraits are taken before the ceremony, everyone can sooner relax and enjoy reception celebrations. If this seems like a sensible plan, then why not take the opportunity to capture that first moment?

Indecisive but playful couples compromise and pose for a shot holding hands around a door frame without actually seeing each other, or even embracing with blindfolds. A fun mood and sense of whimsy also prevail in many actual First Look shoots. Theatrical touches and exaggerated gestures, like entering from an unexpected angle, reflect personality and entertain an audience of family and friends. Lighthearted staging like this can result in truly touching images.

Not quite your style? The most important thing to talk about with your photographer is what feels right to you. Brides and grooms who already feel uncertain about being at the center of attention during their wedding could find that doing a First Look shoot in a quiet place, away from the rest of the preparations, calms nerves and adds romance. When just the two of you take that moment to connect, it is a reminder of what a wedding is really about: not the pageantry, not the photos, but the love and commitment you share. Look into each other’s eyes and for a moment, nothing else matters.

This striking First Look is one of our favorites. A private road lined by tall trees made for a dramatic backdrop and the first shot perfectly evokes the bride’s anticipation. Can you hear her heart beating?
