While many wedding venues offer the refined luxury that has come to define New York style, few offer an escape from it all. By this we mean a setting that feels far off, magical, and is surrounded by blooming flowers and sprawling greenery. This is what makes Stone Mill at New York Botanical Garden so special. Tucked away in the lush, natural grounds that were founded in 1891, Stone Mill blends historic charm with modern comforts. With a capacity of 60 to 120 guests, it provides outdoor and indoor spaces to accommodate a wedding from start to finish. Marked by exposed wooden beams, original brick walls, and warm lighting, the newly renovated building radiates intimate romance.

Finding a dress can prove to be a difficult task for any bride-to-be, even those who have had wedding dreams since childhood. “I am not the best shopper,” Heather says with a laugh. “And I had no idea how to look ‘bridal’ without looking like I was wearing my Grandmother’s crochet.” Any fears of looking like a lace handkerchief were quickly put to rest during a visit to Kleinfeld Bridal. Here, Heather talks about her breathtaking Pronovias dress and bridal personals.

Part 2: Wedding Dress & Personals

With no clear idea of what to wear down the aisle, Heather enlisted the people whose opinion she trusted most for guidance. Everyone met for her appointment at Kleinfeld and Heather explained what she wanted and didn’t want to the stylist. After trying on about eight dresses, she had her “say yes to the dress” moment. She looks back, “As soon as I put my leg in the gown, I knew it was ‘the one.’ I felt like myself. When I walked out of the dressing room, they all confirmed what I already knew. And that was it!”

When Heather first met Amos the Thursday before Memorial Day in 2008, she knew there was something special about him. “I work in the spirits industry and was doing a tasting in the Hamptons during the holiday weekend. I told him that in order for us to have a first date, he would have to get himself a hotel room out there. Finding a hotel in the Hamptons around Memorial Day is near impossible, especially on such short notice. But, somehow, he did it! That really gave me insight into the kind of person Amos is.”

If we’ve noticed anything after doing weddings for over a decade, it’s that each couple is completely unique and different from the next. How they choose to carry out their wedding ceremony is a beautiful demonstration of this fact. And many couples today desire a secular ceremony to signify their union. Here are seven non-religious wedding traditions that can be used to express your love and commitment to each other.

Unity Candle Lighting Ceremony
We talked about the sacredness of candle lighting in a Greek Orthodox wedding. The tradition doesn’t have to be based in a religion, however. The unity candle lighting ceremony is a beautiful way to honor your big day. Three candles are needed to perform the ritual – one for each partner and one to symbolize the new marriage. Before the ceremony, each set of parents lights a candle. Then the officiant reads a script, addressing the couple and their relationship. Finally, using the two smaller candles, the couple lights the larger candle to seal their union.
