There are certain elements of wedding decor that are made to not only look pretty, but serve a functional purpose as well. One such element is the presentation of escort cards and seating charts. Traditionally, escort cards are placed neatly on a table topped with an eye-catching arrangement. After cocktail hour, guests pick up the cards and are directed to their tables. This conventional setup and process is tried and true. However, what we have noticed most recently is that couples are requesting unique and ‘out-of-the box’ designs for their escort cards and seating charts. It’s the first decorative piece people see as they head to the reception after all, and sets the vibe for the rest of the night. And even if you are planning a timelessly classic wedding, this is one area that allows room for putting a personal and creative spin on decor. Feeling inspired? What started out as an afterthought with photographers scrambling to find bits and pieces to place on a hotel room floor while the bride got ready, the flat lay photo is now one of the most anticipated shots in a wedding album. Personal and artistic, it can be perceived as a symbolic portrait of a couple expressed through jewelry, heirloom keepsakes, and invitations. And together, these objects of affection tell a very special story.

Planning and curating are essential to getting a gorgeous flat lay wedding photo. It’s all in the details, so think about which elements of being a bride and getting married mean the most to you. Be sure to talk with your photographer ahead of time – some pros are very experienced in this type of photography and even carry a styling kit with them. Lastly, decorative accents such as flowers and petals, ribbon, ornate dishes, and beautiful ring boxes all help in making a perfect picture. To stimulate a creative flow of ideas, we rounded up highlights of flat lay shots from our Real BB Weddings.

When asked about her desired floral style for her wedding at the New York Botanical Garden’s Stone Mill, Real BB Bride Alexandra replied, “When I met with Bride & Blossom, I explained that I wanted to complement the already beautiful space, with an elevated, wildflower theme.” She continues, “Flowers that felt romantic, whimsical, and chic, but not overly edited. And the colors to capture the impression of a golden sunlight with pops of yellow, orange and pink highlights.” Ever since talking with Alexandra, we’ve been obsessed with the idea of using blossoms we see growing freely in meadows, fields, and forests and tailoring them for an upscale special event.

After Alexandra and Robert’s ceremony, guests gathered for cocktail hour to raise the first of many glasses to congratulate the newlyweds. “The weather had been beautiful all day long,” the bride remembers. “Golden hour was just ending, and the night felt magical. I really couldn’t have imagined a better way to celebrate the start of our marriage.” Here, Alexandra shares the final chapter of their Real BB Wedding story.

Part 4: Reception & Centerpieces

Spirits were high once pre-dinner drinks and hors d’oeuvres concluded. Everyone headed upstairs to The Stone Mill’s dining room where they were welcomed by a warm, enchanted atmosphere. Tables were decorated with low centerpieces featuring roses, ranunculuses, dahlias, lisianthus, oncidium orchids, pieris, and abelia in shades of golden yellow, orange, peach, blush, white, and cream complemented by Italian ruscus and silver dollar eucalyptus. The mix of classic blooms and flowering plants worked to capture Alexandra’s wedding vision of a whimsical garden accentuating the venue’s charmed beauty. “The light pink taper candles added soft elegance, while illuminating the flowers’ texture and dimension. We also trimmed the main ceiling beam with trailing ivy,” she notes.
