When we were tagged in a photo on Instagram featuring artwork of preserved baby’s breath, our first thought was, “Wow! This is beautiful!” Admittedly, our second thought was, “But, what does this have to do with our wedding flowers?” Then we saw that a past bride had made the post and also tagged Soil + Soul Studio. Turns out, the tiny white flowers were actually taken from a bouquet of baby’s breath we made for Holly, the past bride, to carry at her wedding last year. Melanie and Nick met like many couples do these days – online. After a few email exchanges, they made plans to meet at a chic downtown NYC bar only to find out there was a two hour wait to get in. The dive bar just around the corner seemed like a better option. Melanie recalls, “We spent hours talking and playing pool against a Michael Clark Duncan’s look-alike. In the cab ride home, I realized Nick forgot to close out our one-drink tab. That’s how lost in the moment we were.” She continues, “When we said our goodbyes, we both knew that we had just been on our ‘last’ first date.”

Part 4: Card Table, Centerpieces, & Hanging Floral Dance Floor Installation

We always tell our couples not to overlook the card table – it’s the first thing guests see heading into the reception and helps set the tone for the rest of the wedding. Yani and Divinity completely ran with the idea in welcoming their family and friends. The traditional décor fixture took shape in a jaw-dropping tree made of wisteria and birch branches adorned with roses, ranunculus, camellia greenery, and moss. “We had heart-shaped origami place cards, inspired by our connection to Japan, suspended from the branches waiting for our guests,” Yani says.

With the end of each season, we always like to take a moment to reflect on our weddings – what made each one unique, memorable, and especially beautiful. This past summer, we had the pleasure of decorating the most luxurious venues in the New York area. Wedding styles ranged from upscale elegance to natural romanticism to modern chic. As floral designers, it’s always exciting to see how flowers and décor enliven these already gorgeous spaces while expressing a couple’s style and personality.

“There was a lot that went into making our day special. The morning of our wedding, we decided to simply accept everything as it was. After the rooftop ceremony, guests gathered for cocktail hour to raise the first of many toasts honoring the newlyweds. Then it was off to the Vale Ballroom where a magnificent scene awaited them. “We knew that we wanted a transformation between the ceremony and the reception,” the bride says. “Our all-white ceremony was followed by the most colorful reception. We loved that everyone was like, ‘What did I just walk into?’ They were so surprised!”

A chance Saturday brunch in Williamsburg, Brooklyn ended with Heather and Amos finally making the biggest decision in their wedding planning process. “We wanted our wedding to feel fresh and memorable,” says Heather. “We also love the water and wanted to incorporate a water element in some way.” With its luxury rooftop offering breathtaking views of the East River and Manhattan, the William Vale had everything this modern couple was looking for in a wedding venue.
