We are often asked about filler flowers – the background blooms that help bring a wedding bouquet or centerpiece to life. One of our favorites for late summer/early fall is the alstroemeria, also known as the Peruvian Lily. With three to five blooms per stem, spotted petals, and an exotic look, it has a bit more character than other fillers. Color availability ranges from white and blush to unique bi-colors to vibrant orange, pink, red, and purple.

The alstroemeria was named after its discoverer, Baron Claus von Astromer, a Swedish naturalist who happened upon the bloom while collecting seeds in Spain in 1753. In the language of flowers, it symbolizes friendship, devotion, and following your dreams. In addition to beauty and style, if the meaning of your wedding flowers is important to you, then the alstroemeria is an excellent choice to have around on the big day.

When it comes to choosing wedding attire, most brides-to-be let personal style be their guide. After all, you want to look and feel like yourself, but with a bit more polish and shine around the edges. Here, Bride & Blossom featured bride Sara talks about her “say yes to the dress” moment, jewelry, and stepping out-of-the box with her shoes.

Part 2 Wedding Dress & Personals

“I knew that I wanted a big, princess type dress, but without any bling and sparkle,” says Sara. Her search led her to BHLDN where she found a breathtaking design meeting all her criteria. The silhouette featured a simple lace top, fitted waist, and diaphanous, layered tulle skirt. “I knew it was the perfect dress for me when I put it on and couldn’t stop smiling,” she remembers. Finishing her dreamy look with a fingertip length veil, also from BHLDN, and hair styled in loose, flowing curls, the bride had an air of having just stepped out of a fairytale.

Ask anyone who has gone through it, wedding planning is full of surprises. Ashley had a clear idea of what she wanted to wear. But sometimes the dress chooses the bride. “My wedding dress was everything I never knew I wanted,” she says with a laugh. Here, Ashley shares the details about her Monique Lhuillier gown and personals.

Part 2: Saying Yes to the Dress

The first visit to a bridal boutique can be overwhelming. Pressure mounts in the search to find ‘the one’ amidst rack upon rack of gorgeous designs. Any anxiety Ashley was feeling on the way to her appointment at Monique Lhuillier was quickly put to rest the moment she stepped through the door. “My sales person, Frank, told me that this was a journey and we were going to go on it together. He couldn’t have been more right.” She started pulling dresses that met her criteria – long sleeve and completely fitted with all-over lace. The sparks just weren’t flying when she looked in the mirror though. Then one particular dress caught her eye. “It wasn’t lace, it wasn’t long sleeve, and it definitely wasn’t fitted. But there was something about it that stood out to me.” Ashley put on the dress and immediately knew it was ‘the one.’ “The reaction from my Mom, sister, and best friend helped seal the deal. I tried on a few more looks. But at the end of the day, it was this gorgeous and completely unexpected gown that stayed with me.”

Do you know which flower to give to friends and family born in November? Chrysanthemum, the month’s designated birth flower! Festive, eye-catching, and versatile, it’s also a wonderful bloom to incorporate into fall weddings. From bouquets to wedding cakes, we’ve rounded up pretty floral décor ideas with chrysanthemums, this month’s BB Bloom in Spotlight.

Chrysanthemums (commonly known as “mums”) were first cultivated in China where the flower was documented in writings as early as 15th century BC. Around 400 AD, the bloom was introduced to Japan. So taken by the flower’s beauty, the Japanese adopted it as the emperor’s crest and official seal. After being introduced to Europe in the 17th century, the chrysanthemum received its present day name, which derives from the Greek words “chrysos” meaning gold (its original color) and “anthemon” meaning flower. Cultivation over the years has produced various types and colors including white, red, and purple. In the language of flowers, the chrysanthemum represents longevity, fidelity, joy, and optimism. With attributes like these, it’s no wonder couples want the flower close by on their wedding day!
